Kansas City Expands Swim Programs Across Multiple Pools to Meet Demand
Kansas City Parks and Recreation has added new sessions at multiple pools to meet rising demand for group water fitness across neighborhoods.
How we reported this

Kansas City Parks and Recreation opened registration on July 10 for summer swim classes at six city pools, with youth beginner sessions at the Central Pool on 11th and Oak Streets already at half capacity after two days.
Summer heat and the city's established wellness routines have pushed more residents toward water-based exercise that accommodates different mobility levels and schedules. Local programs fill gaps left by gym closures and work demands, offering structured group time without high equipment costs.
Neighborhood pools host mixed-age classes
The Central Pool on 11th and Oak Streets runs parent-toddler water play on weekday mornings while the South Kansas City Aquatic Center near 103rd and Holmes offers evening lap lanes reserved for adults over 50. Both sites also schedule mixed family swims on weekends that include basic stroke instruction for children ages 5 to 12.
Staff at the South Kansas City location added a new arthritis-friendly water aerobics block this month after requests from residents in the Brookside and Waldo areas. The Central Pool extended its teen lifeguard training track to include Saturday morning drills that count toward high school physical education credits.
Last summer the two centers logged 4,200 total participants across all age groups, with youth lessons priced at $48 for an eight-week session and senior classes at $35. Registration numbers through the parks department website show a 12 percent increase over the same period in 2025.
Residents can sign up online or in person at the parks office on 4600 East 63rd Street before spots close. Pool schedules and required forms are posted on the Kansas City Parks and Recreation site for each location.
